Flashing speed signs to increase

New signs are being put up across Nottinghamshire to try to make more motorists slow down.

The county council is spending about £200,000 on installing extra flashing speed signs at 27 sites across the county by March 2010.

The electronic 'Your Speed' signs warn drivers of their speed if they are going too fast.

They will be placed on busy 30mph (48km/h) roads with a proven speeding problem, the council said.

'Limited funds'

There are about 140 already on the county's roads.

Councillor Richard Jackson, cabinet member for transport and highways, said: "These signs have been shown to reduce drivers' speeds by up to five miles per hour.

"We have a limited amount of money to spend, so need to prioritise those roads most in need.

"But we recognise that there are roads where residents feel very strongly that there is a local problem that one of these signs could help with."
