Police replace veteran's medals

A Normandy veteran in Newark who had his medals stolen in a burglary 20 years ago has received help from an unexpected source.

The man, who does not want to be named, had tried to get the medals replaced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

But, unable to find the crime number two decades later, he was unable to get free replacements from the MoD.

Police officers at Newark station held a raffle and bought the medals for the 83-year-old with the proceeds.

Newark Inspector Steve Cartwright took the medals to the man's home and presented his with them.

A police spokesman said: "He was a very modest man who did not want any publicity, but passed on his heartfelt thanks to our staff.

"He had wanted to return to Normandy with other veterans, but felt unable to return without his medals."
