Traffic campaigners use own cars

Campaigners are using their own cars to to try to stop HGVs passing through a Nottinghamshire village.

Some residents say they are fed up of large lorries passing through Alverton on their way to a nearby landfill site.

They say there will be a serious accident unless the lorries are banned and have parked cars on the village's main road to act as a chicane.

The county council has said their call for a 7.5-tonne (7500kg) weight limit will be imposed next autumn.

Campaigner Derek Kennedy said: "We're getting desperate and very frustrated.

"We've done petitions and all sorts but we don't feel like we're being heard."

About 15 vehicles were parked along the main route through Alverton on Tuesday as part of the protest.

Councillor Richard Jackson said: "I can understand their frustration because I've stood in the village and seen the lorries that come through, but obviously we wouldn't condone anything that is going to create a road safety hazard."
