A memorial to soldiers from the Sherwood Foresters who died in World War I has been unveiled in Belgium.

About 11,000 Sherwood Foresters died in fighting on the Western Front but the regiment had no marker there.

Campaigners in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire raised £14,000 to build the 5ft (1.52m) high monument.

The memorial, a triangular column, was dedicated at Tyne Cot cemetery near Zonnebeke in a ceremony attended by about 500 people from the region.

The name of the regiment is carved on one face of the structure.

Cliff Housley, of the Sherwood Foresters' Memorial Committee, said: "It's absolutely brilliant. It shows our men are not forgotten."

Teenagers from the two counties attended the unveiling, as well as former Foresters and other dignitaries.
