Pool shut after legionella found

Water Meadows
The swimming centre opened in 1990

A Nottinghamshire leisure centre has been closed after legionella bacteria was found in the water system.

The organism, which can cause dangerous respiratory problems, was found during testing of the showers at the Water Meadows complex in Mansfield.

The district council said there would be a programme of cleaning and retesting and the centre would be closed for at least 12 days.

It also apologised for having to close the centre over half-term.

It said no traces of the bacteria were found in the swimming areas.

The Water Meadows opened in 1990 and has undergone refurbishments in 2002 and 2007.

As well as the pool, the centre has water slides, a Jacuzzi and gym.

Growth of legionella is associated with quantities of warm water and is most often spread in water droplets.
