Eight dogs dead in woods mystery

Investigations are under way after eight dogs died and a dozen others became ill after walking in woodlands in Nottinghamshire.

Natural England, which is overseeing tests on the dead animals, said three had been linked to the woods but five others were still being examined.

It said it was investigating whether the dogs had been poisoned by chemicals or infected by mites or ticks.

Warnings have been placed on Forestry Commission land near Sherwood Forest.

Owners have been advised to keep dogs on a lead in Haywood Oaks, Blidworth Woods, Sherwood Pines and Thieves Wood.

A spokesperson for Natural England said: "Three dogs are confirmed to have died after being walked in the woods in this area.

"Tests are still being conducted on a further five to determine the cause of deaths and whether these are connected to the woods."
