Restaurant owner Kasa Miah uses the oil vat collection service
Used cooking oil is being collected from restaurants in Nottinghamshire and turned into bio-fuel to power vehicles.
Mansfield environmental firm Untapped Resource started the service to stop caterers pouring fats down the sink and blocking drains.
Businesses are given a vat to fill with used oil, which is then taken for processing to turn it into bio-diesel.
So far 30 eateries across the county have signed up to the environmentally-friendly scheme.
New legislation brought in by the government in 2007 means small businesses are responsible for treating their waste.
Maria Gibson, of Untapped Resource, said: "We go out to small restaurants, fish and chip shops and so on, we collect their waste and deliver it to a local green bio-fuel processor, where it is turned into diesel.
"Water companies have been struggling for years to clear drains of blockages of fat. We're trying to help resolve that problem.
"Any vehicle that runs on ordinary diesel can run on bio-fuel, which is as economical and eco-friendly.
"Our company van runs on bio-fuel, it's very green and your exhaust does not spit out used food or smell."
Kasa Miah, of Mansfield Indian restaurant Naaz, said the service "benefits everyone".
He added: "If you put fat down the drain it blocks up, we have to clean it.
"Now we just pour it into a vat and ring the company to come and collect it when it's full."
