A coroner's investigation has begun after a baby died from a suspected salt overdose at a Nottingham hospital.

The boy was reportedly born prematurely in March and had been placed on a saline drip at the Queen's Medical Centre. He died on 7 July.

The hospital has apologised for "any shortcomings" in the care of the baby.

There will be an inquest to establish the cause of death. Nottinghamshire Police said it would not be carrying out its own inquiry.

Dr Stephen Fowlie, of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "We offer our deepest condolences to the family.

"We are supporting the family in this difficult time and keeping them fully informed of our investigations into the loss of their baby.

"We apologise for any shortcomings in our care of their child."
