Litter fines go on climbing wall

The wall be put up at various locations during the summer

Money raised from fines imposed on people caught dropping litter in a Nottinghamshire town has been used to help youngsters stay out of trouble.

The £75 fixed penalties handed out by Mansfield District Council wardens have helped to pay for a mobile climbing wall in the town.

Almost £18,000 has been raised for the project from 248 fines imposed.

The wall is free for all eight to 16-year-olds and will be erected across the Mansfield area during the summer.

The council said the climbing wall will hopefully have educational benefits.

Council spokesman Martyn Thurman said: "We're distracting them from anti-social behaviour and we'll be teaching them the benefits of not dropping litter, and being decent citizens."
