Dogs found dumped in sealed box

Two dumped dogs
The dogs will be re-homed if their owner cannot be found

Two dogs have been found dumped in a sealed cardboard box on the side of a road in Nottingham.

The Jack Russell terrier-cross dogs survived despite the high temperatures.

They were discovered in Finch Close on Tuesday - the day that two police dogs died in a private vehicle outside Nottinghamshire Police headquarters.

The RSPCA, which is appealing for information about the owner, said the dogs could quickly have developed heat stroke and died.

Heard whimpering

A motorist who had stopped for a break saw the taped-up box and when she approached it she heard whimpering inside.

One of the dogs, a black and tan Jack Russell and Dachshund cross, was wearing a brown leather collar with a metal tag which had "Scooby" on it.

RSPCA inspector Sue Haywood said: "We think the dogs had only been left a short while before they were found as they would have suffered hugely from the heat if they had been there much longer.

"Leaving two dogs crammed inside a sealed box in these temperatures shows so little regard for their safety."

The dogs will be re-homed if their owner cannot be found.

Anyone found guilty of failing to protect an animal's needs could face a six-month prison sentence or a £20,000 fine.
