A drunk driver who knocked down and killed an 88-year-old Nottinghamshire woman has been jailed for 10 years.

Lee Pell, 24, from Pinxton in Derbyshire, admitted causing death by driving without due care while under the influence of alcohol.

Hilda Jepson died on Sutton Road in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, as she made her way to a bingo session on 17 May, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

It is the fifth time Pell has been convicted of drinking and driving.

Pell, who was arrested the day after the crash, was also banned from driving for 10 years.

After sentencing, the head of Nottinghamshire Police's roads policing unit, Ch Insp Andy Charlton, said: "The police work tirelessly to educate drivers about the dangers of both drink-driving and speeding, but for some people the message just doesn't seem to get through.

"We're pleased that the judge has handed down such a lengthy sentence."

Mrs Jepson's son Ray said: "Hilda was a vibrant 88-year-old woman who was getting ready to visit Canada for the 21st time.

"We hope Pell is remorseful, sad and truly sorry for what he has done, but no amount of time in prison will be enough for our family.

"Hilda is gone and will not return. He, however, will return to freedom and a life."
