Fire at a former children's home

Investigations are under way into the cause of a fire at a former children's home in a Nottinghamshire town.

About 30 firefighters spent the night tackling the flames on Park Avenue in Mansfield.

They were first called to the site just after midnight and some were still there damping down on Tuesday morning.

Station manager Bryn Coleman, who was in charge of the operation, said crews had so far not found any people inside the building.

He said: "We have actually had to commit crews inside the building even though it is structurally unsafe to actually carry out a thorough search just to make sure that there's been nobody rough sleeping inside.

"So far the searches have fortunately proved that there's no-one inside. A fire investigation will taking place later this morning."
