A 25-year-old man has been found guilty of manslaughter after a man was stabbed to death in Nottingham.

Pascal Simpson, of Western Boulevard, Nottingham had denied murdering Mark Beard, also 25, in July 2008.

Mr Beard was found with stab wounds on Aston Drive in Bulwell. He later died from his injuries in hospital.

The jury at Nottingham Crown Court found him not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter by a majority verdict.

Simpson has been remanded into custody and will be sentenced on 6 February.

This case is another tragic example of what can happen when someone carries a knife
Det Insp Andy Roberts, Nottinghamshire Police

Janet Mountain, Mr Beard's mother, said: "We're relieved that justice has been done and that Pascal Simpson is going to be locked up for what he has done.

"When he killed Mark, Simpson stole a part of all our lives and we are still trying to come to terms with the fact he has gone.

"Mark was such a loving boy and was working really hard to get his life back on track. He meant so much to so many people and it's still hard to believe we're never going to see him again."

Det Insp Andy Roberts, who led the investigation into Mr Beard's death, said: "Pascal Simpson never denied his involvement in Mark's death, but argued that he was acting in self-defence.

"The jury has decided that Simpson was initially acting in self-defence, but that he went too far and was ultimately responsible for Mark's death.

"This case is another tragic example of what can happen when someone carries a knife, with a relatively minor disagreement rapidly escalating into a fight that resulted in Mark's tragic death."
