Major fire breaks out at factory

Scene of fire
At its height the fire could be seen for miles around

Firefighters are still tackling a blaze at a Nottingham recycling factory, hours after it first started.

At its height more than 70 firefighters and about 12 fire engines were at the textile recycling factory in Arnold Road, Old Basford.

Emergency crews were called to the fire just after 1830 GMT on Tuesday.

Homes on the adjacent Fenton Road were evacuated and other nearby residents were told to stay indoors and keep their doors and windows shut.

Cause investigated

It was feared there could be a risk of the fumes from the fire giving off asbestos particles.

Incident commander Vic Millen said: "Because of the severity of this fire the radiated heat presented a risk in terms of risk of fire to the houses.

"That's why we needed to focus on protecting the surrounding risk.

"When the scene's been secured and [made] safe the fire investigating officers will be able to enter and carry out their investigations.

"We would hope to have a probable cause within 24-48 hours hopefully."

Eyewitnesses reported being able to see the flames for miles around.
