Metal thieves target drain covers

Scrap metal thieves are targeting more roadside drain covers in Nottingham, according to the city council.

The authority said there had been been 43 reported thefts in the last six months and nine had gone missing on one day alone.

It said the Bestwood area of the city was worst affected.

Councillor Jane Urquart said the issue was a big problem and urged members of the public to watch out for anybody acting suspiciously.

She said: "It is causing us a lot of concern.

"It affects safety on our roads and affects the way our drainage system operates as well."
