Residents' call for safer roads

Campaigners say the accident in Colwick was "inevitable"

People living near a road on which a man died when his mobility scooter was involved in an accident with a lorry say more safety measures are needed.

Peter Morely, 73, died after being seriously injured on Mile End Road in Colwick near Nottingham on Thursday.

Keith Middleton, chair of the Colwick Action Committee, said the volume of traffic was a serious problem.

Nottinghamshire County Council said until June, there had been no accidents on Mile End Road so far this year.

In a statement, the council added there had been three reports of "slight accidents" between 2005 and 2007.

Mr Middleton said: "At the last count we had 100 vehicles an hour passing by front doors on Mile End Road and considerably more on Loop Road.

"We warned the council two or three years ago that this was inevitable. It was going to happen and it will happen again because of the volume of traffic."

He added current safety measures were not enough and called for more to be done.
