A Nottingham choir has celebrated its centenary with a special concert.

The Carlton Male Voice Choir had five members when it was started by a coal merchant from Netherfield in 1908, but now it boasts more than 90.

On Sunday the choir performed at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham, with a guest performance by a soprano from the Welsh National Opera.

Money raised will go to drugs charity Dare. The choir's chairman Mike Curtis said it was now stronger than ever.

He said: "It's a very special concert, because clearly none of us will see another centenary concert.

"So therefore it's important to us, because, since I've been in the choir we've gone through the 90th and the 95th, but this is the big one."

Before the end of 2008, the 94-strong choir wants to find six more members, so it has 100 members to mark each of the 100 years.
