Town's big wheel starts spinning

A giant ferris wheel has been unveiled in a Nottinghamshire town.

Standing about 155ft (35m) and seating 144 people at a time, the big wheel will be in Mansfield's Market Place until 8 November.

Gold medal-winning Paralympian Sam Hynd opened the attraction to the public at midday on Saturday.

Mansfield town centre's events manager, Lisa Vincent said everybody in the town was determined to keep up with their bigger neighbours.

She said: "It was our mayor Tony Eggington who really had the vision for this.

"He really wanted to have the same sort of attraction for Mansfield.

"A lot of the cities have this, like Nottingham and Derby, and he said, 'Well, why can't Mansfield have it?'

"So it was really his idea and hard work that's brought it here today."

The opening was delayed by a day.
