Police success in bike campaign

Forty-one vehicles have been seized during the campaign

A six-month crackdown on off-road bike riders illegally using a sand quarry in Mansfield has resulted in the seizure of dozens of vehicles, police said.

Police have targeted bikers using a quarry known as The Desert since April.

They started the crackdown after complaints from walkers and cyclists about bikers using the quarry.

Forty-one vehicles have been seized and 243 off-road bikes and 4x4 vehicles have been turned away since the operation started.

Paths destroyed by bike riders have started to grass over again and damaged woodland is getting a chance to recover at the 42sq-km site, Pc Craig Bromley said.

He added that the number of bikers on the site had dropped since Operation Nebraska started.

Nine people have been arrested and charged with driving-related offences during the campaign.
