City projects face £2m overspend

Old Market Square, Nottingham

Two major projects in Nottingham have each gone £1m over budget, the city council has confirmed.

The costs of the Old Market Square renovation - which has won a major award - have risen to £8.9m.

The bill for the new arts centre by the Lace Market now stands at £14.9m and this figure could still rise.

Delays and unforeseen costs were given as reasons for the overspend but the council defended the projects highlighting the square's popularity.

Problems with building the arts centre on the steep site next to the tram line have also been blamed for rising costs.

Its opening date has been put back again to March.

The ruling Labour group has rejected accusations of wasting money brought by opposition councillors.
