New minority art centre unveiled

New Art Exchange
The art centre will feature exhibition space and a cafe

A £5m art centre that took 18 months to build has been unveiled in Nottingham.

New Art Exchange in Hyson Green is described as the first gallery outside London dedicated to artists from minority backgrounds.

It will feature visual arts from African, African Caribbean and South Asian traditions and will open with a show called Next We Change the Earth.

The centre will include visual arts space and galleries, workshops, performance space and a cafe.

Chairman of the art centre, Eddy Maxwell, said: "New Art Exchange opens its doors with this controversial exhibition to make a dramatic step towards becoming a renowned national arts centre for African, African Caribbean and South Asian arts."

"We are challenging the cliches and myths of Nottingham as a city of danger, crime and threat."
