Plans for £10.5m library unveiled

Plans have been announced for a £10.5m library in a Nottinghamshire town.

The proposed new library in Mansfield would include a learning centre, a youth centre and cafe, with a link through to the town hall.

The new 2,000 sq m (21,500 sq ft) centre would replace the building at the rear of the town hall.

The plans are yet to be approved by Mansfield District Council but if they are passed, it is hoped the library would open at the end of 2011.

Tony Eggington, Executive Mayor of Mansfield, said: "While we still have a number of hurdles to get over, this project is a significant part of a wider regeneration of the area."

Mansfield District Council would contribute £6.5m to the library project if proposals are given the green light, with additional funding from Nottinghamshire County Council.

The council is meeting to discuss plans on 21 October.
