Crackdown on seatbelt offenders

Drivers and passengers caught not wearing seatbelts can expect a £30 fixed penalty fine during a crackdown by police in Nottinghamshire.

The checks, which police said would be "a sustained period of enforcement", are part of a European and National Seatbelt campaign.

Last year seven people were killed and 18 seriously hurt on Nottinghamshire's roads due to not wearing seatbelts.

Police will also target people using handheld mobile phones while driving.

'Getting tough'

Ch Insp Andy Charlton said: "We need to break the habit of people not wearing a seatbelt.

"It's been the law for 25 years but there are still people dying in Nottinghamshire because they don't wear a seatbelt.

"We've been warning people and giving them the chance to change their ways, but now we're going to be getting tough and will be issuing motorists with fixed penalty notices throughout the campaign.

"Our aim is to reach that minority of drivers who routinely break what are sensible laws."
