People on board a train which struck a shopping trolley were lucky to escape unharmed, police have said.
The trolley was deliberately dumped on the tracks near Cresswell on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border.
Although no-one was hurt and the freight train undamaged, the incident could have had "catastrophic" consequences, officers warned.
They have now said people should keep away from train lines and appealed for information about the incident.
The collision took place close to a bridge near the Elmton and Cresswell signal box on 22 August.
Sgt Mick Dawes, of British Transport Police, said: "This was a reckless act of vandalism. I cannot emphasise strongly enough the dangers associated with this type of crime.
"It's vital that we find those involved in this incident in order to point out the possible catastrophic consequences of their actions."
