Older cars taken by scrap thieves

The owners of older cars are being warned to be careful after a spate of vehicle thefts in Nottinghamshire.

While newer cars may be more valuable, police have said more than 25 older cars have been taken in Kimberley, Arnold, Carlton and Eastwood recently.

Thieves have hotwired cars and may be using a low-loading lorry, detectives have said. They believe the vehicles are being sold off for scrap.

Owners have been told to secure their cars and fit additional safety locks.

Sgt Liz Gaskin of the Autocrime Team said since older cars did not have the same security as newer models, owners should take extra care.

"Park your vehicle where there is good natural surveillance and if you are leaving it overnight ensure it is in a well illuminated area as criminals do not like to be in the spotlight as it makes them visible to others.

"Most car crime can be prevented by adopting simple preventative measures so outsmart the thief by making your vehicle less desirable to steal".
