Teenage hero given police award

A 13-year-old Nottinghamshire boy, who helped to save a man's life, has been given a bravery award.

Ryan Grant, from Silverdale, noticed a man, 83, had fallen in a brook and was fighting for his life in Compton Acres, West Bridgford in January.

He climbed in to assist the man and guided emergency services who eventually helped the man to safety.

Ryan has been awarded the Divisional Commander's Community Award by South Nottinghamshire Police.

Police praised the youngster's actions

The pensioner was taken to hospital and made a full recovery.

Pc Graham Collington, who attended the incident, said: "In my opinion Ryan's acts on the day not only assisted the emergency services but also aided in the elderly man's recovery from cold water on a windy night.

"If Ryan's actions had been different there could well have been a different and possibly tragic conclusion to this incident."

Ryan said: "The man that was trying to get the old man out asked 'can one of you help?'

"I volunteered to go into the ditch, as I was trying to drag him out, I was on the phone to the emergency services."
