Drowned girl's body flown to UK

The body of a 13-year-old girl originally from Nottingham has been flown back to the city after she drowned in the US.

Shannon Allcock got into difficulties in a lake in Texas on Friday 4 July. She had been on a family visit there to mark Independence Day weekend.

An inquest into her death is due to be held in the city in the next week.

Shannon's father Gavin told BBC Radio Nottingham she was a happy girl who was a joy to everyone around her.

US move

She had been swimming at Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie when she disappeared under the water.

Her father believes she might have been dragged under by the wake of a passing motor boat.

The police and a dive team found the teenager after about 30 minutes of searching.

She was taken to a nearby medical centre where she died, despite medics spending around an hour trying to resuscitate her.

Shannon's mother, who still lives in the Nottingham area, has been unavailable for comment so far.

Shannon moved out to the US to join her father (originally from Clifton in Nottingham) a few years ago.
