City's £7m square design awarded

The square is designed to allow large public events

Designers of the £7m revamp of Nottingham's Old Market Square have won a national award.

The project, which was officially unveiled in April 2007, saw the square levelled out with granite paving, new seating areas and flowerbeds added.

Architects Gustafson Porter have now been given an award by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

They were praised for creating "a more inviting public space, which encourages people to make it their own".

The Princess Royal unveiled a plaque to commemorate the redeveloped public space on 3 April 2007.

The first slab of the redesigned square was laid by New Zealand singer Hayley Westenra in April 2006.
