Residents annoyed at waste plans
Villagers in part of Nottinghamshire have complained that rubbish from Derby is going to a local landfill site.

Derbyshire County Council said its contractor, the Waste Recycling Group, takes about 5,000 tonnes of waste to Cotham, near Newark, each year.

WRG says it is allowed to take waste from Derby and the site operates within conditions set by Nottinghamshire County Council.

But people in Cotham say counties should handle their own waste.

Landfill shortfall

Parish councillor Harry Harrington said: "I'm sure there must be quarries available in Derbyshire where this waste could go.

"Limestone is quarried on a quite large scale in Derbyshire. You would think that they need to be filled up, restored. Why can't this be done with waste?"

Another Cotham resident, Clive Franklin, added: "We're taking the brunt of everyone's rubbish and I don't see why we should, not any more."

WRG said non-hazardous rubbish is brought from the Derby waste transfer station which is a regional collection centre and there is a shortfall of available landfill within Derbyshire.
