First tram death victim is named

A 23-year-old man who died after being hit by a tram in Nottingham has been identified by police.

Officers said Matthew Dear of Hucknall, was out celebrating with friends when he stepped in front of the slow moving tram at Weekday Cross on Saturday.

He was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre, where he later died.

Mr Dear's death is the first such fatality since the trams were launched in the city in 2004. Police have appealed for witnesses.

Nottingham Express Transit, which operates the trams, said CCTV footage and data from the vehicle would be studied to determine what happened.
