First fine by talking CCTV system

A fine has been handed out in Nottingham to a man who ignored a talking CCTV camera which demanded litter be removed.

Six cameras were installed in the city two weeks ago to enable control room staff to speak directly to those behaving anti-socially.

So far 20 people have been warned about dropping rubbish and one man has been given a £75 fixed penalty.

The cameras are on trial for six months to see if they can have an impact.

Pilot areas

James Rhodes, from the Nottingham Crime and Drug Partnership, said: "These are here to deter things like littering, drinking in alcohol-free zones and general rowdy behaviour.

"Most people have responded to the CCTV cameras and have modified their behaviour with just one exception."

Nottingham is one of 20 areas in England to be given money by the government to bring in talking security cameras.

There are an estimated 4.2 million CCTV cameras in Britain.
