Work starts on accident hot-spot

Work has started to improve safety on a Nottingham road which has seen almost 50 accidents in just five years.

The city council is investing £440,000 of government money from Bestwood Park Drive to Queen's Bower Road.

The improvements will include a new mini roundabout and a 20mph school safety zone outside Rise Park School.

There were 48 accidents resulting in injuries reported to police in the area between January 2001 and January 2006. Work should be finished by October.

Community input

The council sent out questionnaires to residents asking them what types of traffic problems they had seen and what could be done to tackle the issues.

"We really wanted to engage local residents at an early stage of the scheme so that we could feed their knowledge and experience into the design," said Paul Williams, from Nottingham City Council's accident investigation team.

"This has proved to be a great success and together I am confident we will deliver an effective scheme."

Bus stops will also be improved in the area and vehicle-activated signs telling drivers to slow down will form part of the new scheme.
