Incinerator firm vows to fight on
A recycling firm may appeal a council decision rejecting its plans to expand an incinerator in Nottingham.

The Waste Recycling Group (WRG) had applied to burn an additional 250,000 tonnes of rubbish over the next four years at the Eastcroft incinerator.

City councillors turned down the application to build a third furnace as they said it could effect possible economic regeneration in the area.

A WRG spokesman said the firm was deeply disappointed with the decision.

'Tested technology'

Jon Collins, leader of Nottingham City Council, agreed more work needed to be done to find alternative ways to get rid of rubbish.

A WRG statement said the decision "flies in the face of the council's own Waste Local Plan, which explicitly supports this extension of Eastcroft".

"Eastcroft is a well-run, well-managed facility that uses tried and tested technology to help manage the city's rubbish and heats thousands of local homes," the statement said.

"The committee has refused our application on the grounds that it would inhibit the regeneration of neighbouring sites, yet Eastcroft will be operating for the next 30 years with or without the extension."

The firm said it was reviewing its options, including the possibility of an appeal.

Campaign group Nottingham Against Incineration and Landfill (Nail) had been fighting the proposed expansion.
