Pc Bown, 23, who was shot in the stomach in the Lenton area of Nottingham on Monday night, is in a serious but stable condition in intensive care after the one-hour operation on Thursday.
She is also being treated for a chest infection but should not require any more surgery, the clinical director at the Queens Medical Centre said.
The second operation was "routine" and was undertaken to "re-explore" the site of the original surgery to ensure there were no complications, clinical director John Doran said.
"Her condition deteriorated slightly overnight and although it was considered that this was due to the development of a chest infection, it was felt that it would be appropriate to undertake a second operation... to make sure there were no delayed effects from her gunshot injury."
The probationary officer first underwent emergency surgery at the Nottingham hospital in the early hours of Tuesday.
