Ways of bolstering flood defences along the River Trent in Nottingham are being considered by the Environment Agency.
The area covered spans down the Trent from Sawley to Colwick. A consultation period is underway until 23 December.
The agency is considering two options for work which is not likely to start before Spring 2007.
The first involves raising the flood wall along the Victoria Embankment and the second means building a new embankment parallel to Bathley Street.
This would take in surrounding football pitches and recreation ground.
Malcolm Dineley from the Environment Agency said: "We're looking at raising the existing defences that run along parallel with the road that runs parallel with the river through there.
"And it's going to be looking to raise the defences from the Wilford toll bridge right the way round past the suspension bridge and tying in to the Trent Bridge with the main area of work in the Meadows area."
There are concerns the work could disrupt events held on the Victoria Embankment such as the Riverside Festival.
