Police target underage drinking
Police in Nottinghamshire say they are determined to alert parents to the problems of underage drinking.

They say up to 50 young drinkers have been caught recently gathering in groups, swearing, damaging property or vomiting in the Eastwood area.

These groups have been broken up and some children taken home to their parents and given warnings.

Police have warned off-licences selling alcohol to underage drinkers and promised follow-up visits.

Hospital visits

On Friday evening officers targeted youngsters in Eastwood and the surrounding areas as part of Operation Slur.

Police spokesman Paul Horton said: "Most parents that have been spoken to about their children have been quite taken back by the police bringing their children home in a drunken state."

He said some youngsters who had passed out because of drink in parkland were taken to hospital without their parents' knowledge.

Local area commander for Broxtowe North Chris Thompson said the problems were worst on weekend evenings.

Complaints have been made by residents in Awsworth, Kimberley, Brinsley, Eastwood, Giltbrook and Greasley.

"Police officers, police community support officers and special constables will be visiting areas of parkland or similar open spaces where local youths congregate to consume alcohol," he said.
