Nottinghamshire police say a new custody suite will help improve policing in the county.
The unit in Carlton is opening on Wednesday, police officials said.
The number of people being arrested in the county has increased in recent years, putting extra pressure on the city's Bridewell custody suite.
The new unit at Carlton, the sixth in the county, is equipped with the latest technology, including a computer which scans fingerprints electronically.
A machine to detect Smart Water - a liquid used to mark property - will also be installed in the suite.
If Smart Water is detected on a suspect, the police can try to match it to a possible theft.
Officers at the suite will be joined by staff from the drug and alcohol action team, who will interview prisoners involved with substance abuse.
