Thousands of primary school pupils are visiting Nottingham Trent University this week for a three-day science and technology festival.

Youngsters will be involved in hands-on experiments and demonstrations as part of the Sci-Tec Festival of Science.

Activities will include working with a rocket scientist to design, build and launch a propelled rocket.

The pupils will also programme and make a robotic arm and extract DNA from fruits and vegetables.

They will also come face-to-face with unusual animals such as poison dart frogs, bird eating tarantulas, a boa constrictor and orange-winged parrot.

Dr Avtar Matharu, chemistry lecturer, said: "The festival is intended to show youngsters how much fun science can be and how important it is in their everyday life.

He said: "Science is very important to Nottingham as it becomes the next generation Science City. "
