GP denies 'sex for drugs' charge
A Nottinghamshire police surgeon swapped drugs for sex with an addicted patient, a General Medical Council tribunal has been told.

It heard Dr Bellipady Sudharam Rai, of Sheepwalk Lane, Ravenshead, Nottingham forced the woman to provide him with sexual favours over a six-year period.

It is alleged encounters took place in the doctor's surgery, his car, in a nursing home and two other properties.

Dr Rai denies a charge of serious professional misconduct.

Drugs prescribed

The doctor was working as a family GP at a practice in Rainworth while also working as a surgeon for Nottinghamshire Police, the GMC Fitness to Practice Panel, sitting in Manchester, heard.

It is claimed that when the woman came for a first appointment he tried to kiss her and told her he would ensure she had an adequate supply of drugs if she would "go further" with him.

It is also alleged he prescribed the drugs including sedatives diazepam and chlormethiazole, and painkiller dihydrocodeine, despite knowing the patient had an addiction problem.

The woman, known as Mrs CJ, said she had failed to tell the doctor's wife, who worked as the practice manager, because she needed the pills.
