Road engineers have made several archaeological discoveries during work on the A46 in Nottinghamshire.
Much of the road is part of the ancient Fosse Way, linking Bath and Lincoln, with most other sections upgraded to dual-carriageway.
Preparatory work is starting on one of the remaining single-carriageway stretches, from Widmerpool to Newark.
Evidence of the county's historical past has been unearthed, with the discovery of an ancient burial ground.
Old Roman road
Bill Birkett, Highways Agency project manager, said: "These have revealed there is a likelihood of finding a Saxon cemetery.
"There is the Fosse Way, which is the old Roman road, and where the existing A46 does not exactly follow it then the old Roman road will be intact ."
The road should be upgraded from 2008 and this will make the whole stretch from Lincoln down to the M1 at Leicester dual carriageway.
The new 17-mile scheme would bypass East Stoke and Farndon, include improved junctions and follow a new line at Flintham.
