'Fatal crash driver blamed wife'
A driver dragged his fatally injured wife from the passenger seat of their car to claim she had been behind the wheel, a court heard.

Vimvai Chakudunga, 28, was driving on the A60 at Ravenshead, Notts, when the vehicle left the road, jurors heard.

Mr Chakudunga, from Mansfield, told onlookers his wife, Claire, had swerved to avoid a pedestrian - she died from head injuries.

He denies death by careless driving and failing to give a blood specimen.

Fractured skull

The ongoing trial at Nottingham Crown Court was told Mr Chakudunga, of Goldsmith Street, was driving the Vauxhall Corsa when it crashed into a garden on 27 November last year.

A man and woman in a passing car stopped and saw the accused climb over to the passenger seat and drag his wife out of the car, it was alleged.

He told a Red Cross worker his wife was driving and had swerved to avoid a pedestrian, jurors were told.

Mrs Chakudunga suffered a fractured skull and died 10 days later without regaining consciousness.
