Injured cows cause M-way closure
Cows on M1
The cows were stranded on the motorway
A lorry transporting cattle has overturned on the M1, causing the northbound carriageway to be closed.

Injured cows were strewn across the carriageway, bringing motorists travelling north to a halt between junctions 24a and 25 near Nottingham.

A woman was also trapped in her overturned 4x4 vehicle during the incident at 0940 BST on Thursday.

The police, RSPCA and a vet have been rushed to the scene to deal with the traffic control and animal casualties.

Cows on the road

A police spokesman said: "We received lots of calls from members of the public.

"A trailer has overturned and the cows were spread out across the M1.

"The cattle were on the road as well as on the embankment just north of the Severn Trent Water Works.

"Many of the cows appeared to be injured.

"We have requested a vet to attend the scene and transport for the cattle."
