Nottinghamshire police have expressed concern after shots were fired in broad daylight.
The incident happened just before 1600 BST on Monday, on Larwood Grove in the Sherwood area of Nottingham.
An undisclosed number of shots were fired by a group of men who drove away in a small white van.
The vehicle is thought to have had a roof rack and a smashed windscreen.
Officers from Operation Stealth are now appealing for anyone who saw the van to come forward.
Although no one was hurt, they say the presence of weapons in the city - and people willing to use them - is grave cause for concern.
Operation Stealth was set up specifically to deal with the rising number of gun related crimes in Nottingham.
