Parish poll vote goes against Daventry canal plan

A parish poll in a Northamptonshire town has found the majority of voters are against plans to develop the canal-side and build a marina.

More than 3,000 people voted on the plans for "Waterspace", the development of the Grand Union Canal in Daventry.

Just over 2,300 people voted against the scheme, with 721 in favour of it.

The result has not bound the district council, but the organisers said it gave the authority a clear indication of how local people felt.

The Waterspace concept includes housing, offices and leisure facilities for people who come to the town on narrowboats.
