New site found for council homes

Council housing could be built on open land in Northamptonshire after the proposed site of a former garage was deemed unsuitable.

Newnham Road in Northampton has been chosen as a possible site for six family homes by the town's borough council.

Surveyors ruled out its previous choice in Kingsthorpe because two main sewer pipes run underneath.

The council said it would consult residents on the new plans.

Cash bid

It is seeking Government funding and has already received £450,000 from the Homes and Communities Agency to help build eight homes in Woodside Way, King's Heath.

Sally Beardsworth, cabinet member for housing, said: "Although the garage site isn't suitable, we hope the new location being proposed will be and will get the backing of local residents."

The council also wants to hear suggestions on how it can improve the garage site on Bondfield Avenue.

It will find out in December if its bid for cash for Newnham Road has been been successful.
