Work has begun in Northamptonshire on a centre of excellence for the construction industry.

Based in Daventry, iCon will comprise offices and a conference centre which will double as a concert hall.

Winvic Build of Northampton have been appointed to construct the building in Moulton Park and started work on site earlier this week.

ICON (East Midlands), a charitable organisation set up to run iCon, said it should open by the end of 2010.

A spokesman said iCon will encourage businesses in the East Midlands to work with green technologies.

The conference facilities will be available to businesses and communities in and around Daventry for meetings, exhibitions and concerts.

David Walker, chairman of ICON (East Midlands), said: "iCon couldn't be better placed to serve the needs of... new businesses working with sustainable construction techniques, companies looking for an exciting meeting venue and Daventry's communities wanting concert and exhibition space.

"This landmark centre has the potential to deliver a huge amount of economic, social and personal business development in the heart of Daventry."
