New mental health unit for young

Building work will begin on Monday for an inpatient unit for children and teenagers with mental health problems in Northamptonshire.

The county council has given planning permission for the unit on the Princess Marina Hospital site in Northampton.

It will provide assessment and treatment in a 10-bed facility, said Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

A house on site has already been demolished and the new unit is expected to open in April 2010.

The NHS said the unit will provide a safe, secure and therapeutic environment for 13 to 18-year-olds with a range of mental health problems.
