Deaths on roads reach record low

The number of people killed on roads in Northamptonshire last year has fallen to its lowest level since records began in 1960.

Road deaths in 2008 were down to 35, 39% lower than in 2007 when 57 people died, and a 53% decrease on 2006 when 74 were killed.

The highest year total was in 1989 when 108 people died.

Of the 35 victims last year, two were motorcyclists, compared to six in 2007 and 14 in 2006.

Brian Ronaghan, casualty reduction partnership manager at Northamptonshire Police, said: "It is very good news that the number of deaths has fallen and this reflects the hard work of all the agencies involved in the partnership.

"However, work must continue to ensure this downward trend continues during 2009, as one person killed on our roads is one person too many."
