Marine died 'doing what he loved'

The widow of one of four Royal Marines killed in Afghanistan has said that he "died doing what he loved".

Recently-married Cpl Marc Birch, of Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, died in an explosion with Sgt John Manuel and Marine Damian Davies.

Earlier, L/Cpl Steven Fellows died from injuries suffered in another explosion.

Cpl Birch's widow Charlene said: "Marc was not only my husband but my best friend and my soul mate. I was so lucky to share 10 fantastic years with him."

'Remarkable person'

She added: "I am immensely proud of who he was and what he had achieved being a Royal Marine. He died doing what he loved.

"Marc was a remarkable person who inspired and touched the lives of so many people.

"My love for Marc will live on in my heart forever and special memories will never be forgotten."

Lieutenant Colonel Jim Morris Royal Marines said: "Cpl Marc 'Birchy' Birch was an outstanding Royal Marine Commando and a popular and very capable leader.

"Courageous, determined, warm-hearted and with an impish sense of humour - he demanded high standards from his men but always motivated them by personal example and commitment."
