Litter bugs at Northampton bus station face prosecution
|
The main bus station in Northampton is to get a deep clean and make-over in preparation for a crackdown on vandals and people dropping litter.
Northampton Borough Council will carry out the five-day clean-up at Greyfriars bus station starting on 18 October.
Work will mainly be done out of hours to avoid inconvenience to commuters.
The bus station has 69 bins but more than 6,000 items of litter and thousands of cigarette butts are scattered on the floor each day.
After the clean-up the council has threatened to prosecute anyone found littering.
Brendan Glynane, cabinet member for community safety, said he hoped people would see a difference.
He said: "But at the end of the day it is up to every individual who uses the bus station to keep it clean after the event.
"This way we can all be proud of this gateway to a great town."
Discarding cigarette butts, littering or graffiti of any kind are criminal offences and persons caught doing this will be prosecuted a borough council spokesman said.
